In biology, regeneration is the process of renewal and restoration, which in our eyes, almost sound like completely different concepts but essentially, these opposing forces are very much part of nature and its cyclic, sustainable system. With that in mind and inspired by the original massive sculptural quality of stone quarries where the marble slabs are mined from, our piece is a call back of the two-dimensional sliced stone slabs to its origins while also considering the life cycle of a piece of marble stone.

Through various iterations we developed a demountable structural system that can be easily used to stack the stone slabs, creating a piece that restores its sculptural qualities. It is a prototype that involves cutting up a stone slab, with the idea that after the exhibition, it can be taken apart and reused for other purposes if required. In this instance, we chose to illuminate the sculpture from inside to accentuate the stone’s natural unique pattern, colours, and veining, creating a stone lantern. Furthermore, with so many types of shapes that the stone can be cut into, the possibilities for assembly are limitless, giving the potential be reused from construction waste to give them a new life.
